A Prayer For Wings @ King's Head Theatre

London audiences have a rare chance to see the internationally renowned stage and screen director Sean Mathias revive his award-winning A Prayer For Wings, following its run in Swansea this summer. If I had Wings Id fly. This touchingly tender and strikingly relevant 1985 play tells the story of Rita, who lives in a derelict church in Swansea with her disabled mother, for whom she has been carer since she was ten years old. With Mam suffering from multiple sclerosis, and no family or friends to turn to for support, Rita fills her days with romantic dreams. She yearns for the love of a man, fantasises of escaping on a cruise ship to America and aches to fly away to a life of beauty and love. With an all-Welsh cast featuring Llinos Daniel, Alis Wyn Davies and Luke Rhodri, this mesmerising and darkly entertaining production tells a tale of bravery with startling humour and endless passion, and explores the intense conflict of care, family and interdependence, set against a womans hopes and dreams. This is a work with all the marks of a mature and major writer. Compassion, humour, wit and truth a magnificent tale of female heroism. Daily Mail. Sean Mathias returns to the Kings Head Theatre, where he was first supported as a fledgling playwright, and is best known for his work as a stage and screen director, including Ian McKellen On Stage, Waiting for Godot, No Mans Land, A Little Night Music, Les Parents Terribles and the award-winning film of Martin Shermans Bent.
