Writers Lab Course @ Soho Theatre (until June 2020)

Weve played a unique and award-winning role in the development of new writing in Britain for more than 40 years. Our Writers Lab programme is designed to support new playwrights to create a full-length play or piece of theatre, over 9 months. We meet participants once a month from October through to June, on Tuesday evenings or Saturdays. Workshops cover a wide range of topics and are led by Chris White, Lakesha Arie-Angelou, Holly DeAngelis and Jules Haworth with a number of guest artists involved over the year. We take writers through a three-draft process with one-to-one dramaturgy support and at the end of the process writers submit to our presitigious Tony Craze Award (annual)/Verity Bargate Award (biennial). Writers who have completed the programme include: Amrou Al-Kadhi, Archie Maddocks, Charlotte Josephine, Ella Road, Holly Robinson, Iman Qureshi, Ifeyinwa Frederick, Kalungi Ssebandeke, Matilda Ibini, Milly Thomas, Phoebe clair-Powell, Ross Willis, Ryan Calais Cameron, Tom Wright, Yolanda Mercy and many more. Course structure Nov 2019-June 2020: Applicants must be available for the full programme including Saturday 2nd November. Saturday workshops involve all 48 writers, Tuesday workshops are classes of 16 which take place over the first 3 Tuesdays of the month. Nov- Saturday 2nd 10am-6pm Nov- Tuesdays 6.30-9.30pm Dec- Tuesdays 6.30-9.30pm Jan- Saturday TBC Feb- Tuesdays 6.30-9.30pm March- Tuesdays 6.30-9.30pm April- Saturday TBC May- Saturday TBC June- Saturday TBC The early bird fee for the full programme is 150 and we have bursaries available to people on Universal Credit, other benefits, or a low income. We also have two additional bursaries, the Yolanda Mercy Bursary and the Ifeyinwa Frederick Bursary, for people who identify as Black (African and/or Caribbean descent) and are on a low income/disabled/LGBTQ+. Soho Theatre is an equal opportunities organisation, and is using positive action to make sure that the people we work with are representative of our diverse community. All applicants who are new to us and identify as people of colour, as having a disability, or as being on the LGBT+ spectrum can request an informal phone call to talk through their application. If you are unable to speak to us over the phone due to access needs, we can also offer a meeting face-to-face. Please see the application below for more information. We welcome applicants from all over London and beyond and particularly encourage applications from people living in the London Borough of Waltham Forest.
