The Berto Pasuka Lecture 2019: Portrait of a Black Queer Briton by David McAlmont @ National Portrait Gallery

BlackOut UK & The National Portrait Gallery Present: The Inaugural Berto Pasuka Lecture & Prize Launch. Celebrated as one of the most exquisite voices in British music, vocalist and songwriter David McAlmont marks 25 years of international artistic contributions and achievements by giving an illuminating overview of his career and more recent historical academic research and achievements focused on extraordinary people who challenged conventions of sexuality and gender both in their lives and in the places they created and inhabited. The Pasuka Lecture and Prize, named in honour of the pioneering dancer, choreographer, Jamaican migrant to Britain, and Black gay man, Berto Pasuka (1911-1963), celebrate pioneering contributions to the arts. The Lecture and Prize honour and celebrate creative work that unapologetically confronts and challenges conventional narratives around race and sexuality that amplify the existence of voices too often hidden and unheard in cultural spaces. The appointment as Chair of the Prize Panel and the invitation to give the Inaugural Pasuka Lecture crystallises Davids collaborative work with BlackOut UK to amplify the presence of Black Queer people in cultural spaces.
