Lord Cashman began his acting career at a young age and is best remembered for his appearances in EastEnders where he played the role of Colin Russell a character who shared the first gay kiss in a British soap opera. In 1989 he co-founded Stonewall, the LGBT rights charity, serving as its Founding Chair for five years. Lord Cashman became a Labour MEP in 1999, acting as the party's spokesman on human rights in the European Parliament. He went on to serve as Chair of the Labour Party's National Executive Committee in 2012. Lord Cashman was awarded a CBE in 2013 for public and political service and was made a Life Peer in 2014.
