Join Dr. Ian Massey for an evening of discussion, in the first of a series of events to mark the 50th anniversary of the decriminalisation of male homosexuality in England and Wales. Dr. Ian Massey will discuss his research on the hitherto unexplored queer history of St Ives. Central to his project is the sculptor John Milne (1931-1978). Originally from Eccles, Milne lived in St Ives from the early 1950s onwards, where he worked initially as an assistant to Barbara Hepworth before setting up his own studio. From the mid-1950s onwards, Milnes house Trewyn became a meeting place for an alternative subculture of both British and international artists, actors and writers. Within his talk Ian will read extracts from privately held letters and journals by Milne and members of his gay circle. He will also consider the encodification of queer identity in works from the Whitworths collection, both by Milne and by other gay visitors to St Ives, including Francis Bacon, Patrick Procktor and Keith Vaughan. The talk will also offer a rare private viewing of some of the artworks discussed in the talk.
