During the Summer months of July and August, many sections of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) communities around the world hold Pride celebrations. Gay Pride began in the 1960s and was a public way for LGBT communities to protest against inequality, social and often legal injustices. In many countries and cities, these pride events still have very political agendas whereas in more liberal countries, they are seen more as a celebration and social event. Given that global attitudes towards the LGBT community are in general much more tolerant and accepting than they were in the 1960s, the question is often asked why Pride events even happen or why isnt there a Straight Pride?. ALLOUT, The University of Manchester LGBT Staff Network Group is pleased to host several guest speakers who will give their own insight in to why Pride is still important and the challenges that still face LGBT people in Manchester and the wider UK.
