A History of the 20th Century Through Maps

In Conjunction with London Book & Screen Week, October Gallery presents 'A History of the 20th Century in Maps' with Tim Bryars and Tom Harper. From the Beatles to the Bomb, from top-secret documents to mass propaganda, maps tell many stories, allowing us to explore changing social attitudes towards the unfamiliar and unconventional, from Jewish London at the turn of the century to women in the workplace, and from the Edwardian opium trade to gay London in the 1980s. Authors of recently published British Library bestseller A History of the 20th Century in 100 Maps, Tim Bryars & Tom Harper, reveal how maps permeated almost every aspect of daily life in the last century. This illuminating talk will bring to life the rich history of the modern age, as chronicled in maps. Tim Bryars is an antiquarian bookseller specialising in maps, and an organiser of the annual London Map Fair. He appeared in the BBC series The Beauty of Maps. Tom Harper is the British Librarys curator of antiquarian mapping, and co author of Magnificent Maps: Power, Propaganda and Art (2010).
